Abstract: Authorship, Directing and the Dramaturgy of Translation
in the Commedia dell'Arte Tradition

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of the concertatore in the early commedia dell'arte and to explore the implications that is has for our concepts of director, dramaturge and author in the context of modern performances in national cultures with and without impromptu traditions. My corpus will consist chiefly of manuals and theoretical works from the seventeenth and eighteeth centuries but also of scenarios and commedia-based scripts in various dialects and languages. My objective is to show the way in which the roles and responsibilities of the author, director and dramaturge must be understood in commedia scholarship, training, and production.
