Welcome

This conference brings together theatre researchers and artists from various parts of the globe to explore the directorial principles, practices and legacy of the pioneering Russian director, actor, teacher and theorist, Constantin Stanislavsky (1863-1938). This marks the first gathering in
Canada devoted to the work of Stanislavsky and features an assembly of international academicians and professionals from theatre and related disciplines from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Nigeria, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States who bring a multitude of perspectives and points of entry into this incredibly complicated subject matter.

The program features a workshop for directors, The Method Director, conducted by Gene Lasko of the New School University, New York. Marrie Mumford, of Métis/ Chippewa-Cree ancestry, will give an illustrated talk, Stanislavsky and Indigenous Performance, sharing her journey with the work of Stanislavsky through her teachers Morris Carnovsky, Sonia Moore, Herbert Bergoff and Irma Sandry. Charles Marowitz, acclaimed director, playwright, teacher, critic, author of over a dozen books on theatre, and proponent of Stanislavsky’s approach to acting and directing, will deliver the keynote address.

Plans are underway to publish a peer-reviewed collection of essays reflecting the sweep of issues and perspectives surrounding the theme of the conference; this publication will add important dimensions to current scholarship on Stanislavsky.
