International Theatre Conference
Directing and Authorship in Western Drama

October 23-25, 2003
Acadia University

This conference will bring together scholars and practitioners from various parts of the world to explore the subject of directing and authorship in Western drama. The conference will address the aesthetic, intellectual, theoretical and legal implications of directing in relation to the author and the literary text, asking:

• What is the obligation of the director to the author of the play?
• Is the director an interpreter, a co-author or a creator?
• To what extent is the meaning of a play encoded in the literary text?
• By what process does the director ascertain the intentions of the    writer?
• What is the relationship between dramatic intent and directorial    concept?
• By what criteria is the director’s contribution in a production    assessed?
• Who are author and proprietor of a theatrical performance?

These and other related questions will be addressed by considering a range of provocative views in the form of research papers, panel discussions and practitioner forums. Since this subject crosses disciplines and boundaries, the conference will provide opportunities for both formal and informal dialogue among academics and professionals from theatre and related fields.
Individual critical submissions should include a titled abstract, complete contact information and institutional affiliation of the participant, and a short biographical note (as it will appear in the program). Panel proposals should include a session title, the name of the contact person for the session, contact information and biography of each presenter in the session, and abstracts of each paper or presentation. Submissions by graduate students are welcome.

Direct Inquiries and proposals should be sent to:
